Bush tucker
What kind of food could we take on camp to cook up in the bush? Something to keep us cosy
on a damp night in a tent?
Chalking it in Art Extension
To get to know each other and find out a bit more about the students in the Year 7 and 8 art extension groups, they drew self-portraits with a twist. Students used chalk to outline their heads on the concrete outside the art room, then filled the area around their heads with things that they love doing and a part of who they are.

Amo La Pizza
Wow! We’ve come back from fitness to Big Pizza Pies. It’s Amore ( To quote DEAN
MARTIN ) They are so delicious our mouths are watering in anticipation!!!
A test with a splash
The Superswimmers group in Room 14 at H.I.S were out for a grand
adventure, our Inquiry! We were going to
Soft Materials to create a pool noodle so we could complete our social
action: to create a swimming programme
to teach beginner swimmers how to be more confident in the water. Click, click, click went our sewing machines, and
all too soon we were done. Splash! We
were testing our pool noodles in the pool Eek! The water was FREEZING, we swam
around a little bit till we were warm, and the pool noodles worked perfectly,
YAY! We can’t wait till we can donate
them.

Blueprint Fasion and Wearabe Art Competition
A group of students have been meeting at lunchtimes with Mrs Watson and Miss Haag to design and create entries for the Howick Blueprint Fashion and Wearable Art Competition 2014. There are three student sections, and we have students entering the Mask/Hat section, and the Recyled section. From pine needles to shopping recipts, keep and eye out for more glimpses of their creations as they develop.
Navigating the globe and promoting water safety through music
Jorja, Tiara, Aaliyah, Kendyl,
Naashia, Ajay and Aven from Room 17 have been learning their instruments since Week
5. They plan to create a musical composition with a focus linked to teach people how to
use navigation tools such as maps and a compass. We were learning about the
texture of music last week, and we had a fun time creating our own percussion
music using suggested formations during Week 6.
William, Violet, Priyanka, Samantha, Jorale, Rayleina, Luke, Lorraine, Liam, Ezekiel and Jasmine from Room 14 have started learning instruments on Tuesday. Their goal is to create a musical composition that encourages people wear life jackets while being involved in water activities. We had a great time learning simple rhythm notations this week that are going to be useful for making music.

Melanoma Foundation visit
A group of students from Room 7 invited representatives from the Melanoma Foundation of New Zealand to come and speak to them about skin cancer for their inquiry learning. Linda and Lyn shared some very interesting, helpful, and concerning information about melanoma. These students are aiming to create art work that helps raise awareness of skin cancer, and encourages students at H.I.S to be sun smart. Students also presented ideas they have to help raise money for the foundation on Spotty Day, which will be held on March 28th. Watch this space to see what they come up with.
Music Inquiry
We
started the inquiry classes last week and Dante, Darren, Connor, Creshanda,
Naomi, Shekinah & Jimmy from Room 16 have been busy making their own music tracks on the

Swimming Sports
In preparation for our school swimming sports, which was held on Friday, students have been in a frenzy creating signs, banners, chants and props to support their whanau. Cale and Andre from Room 21 came to Art with an enormous old blue sheet from home and a picture of a shark. We projected the image onto the sheet so they were able to chalk the outlines in, then, with not a lot of previous painting experience between them, they worked really hard to complete this fantastic banner for whanau Mansfield. Just the sight of it would make anyone swim faster! Well done boys.
Emeka and Mujeeb from Room 9 hoped to endow whanau Cooper with the Hulk's superhuman strength to help them get through a big day of games, racing and chanting. We will hear at assembly today if it was to enough to take out enough points to be the winning whanau. It was an amazing day and we can't wait for the next sports day when we can bring these banners out again.

Extension Groups
Students have been auditioning for extension groups over the past few weeks for Sewing, Food, Art and Music. Groups are currently being finalised, after a huge amount of interest. Specialists will work with these groups throughout the year, producing all kinds of exciting creations.
Music Extension Groups
Students
are offered a variety of music extension groups to extend their music
abilities. There are lots of students who expressed their interest in
participating in these groups. We have some amazing talents at school! The
Music Specialist has finalised the lists for the School Choir, Jazz Group,
Ukulele Group and Bands. We are currently looking for more instrumental players
for orchestra. Most of the music extension groups will start running this week.
Tasters
The first weeks of the school year saw all Year 7 and new Year 8 students, along with our International students at H.I.S take part in our Taster programme.
In Visual Art students were introduced to the art room and given an idea about some of the things we get up to here. We looked at some previous inquiry projects, as well as the kinds of things we do in Art Extension. Then we got stuck in to a watercolour workshop, starting with some basic techniques, followed by a painting of their choice.
At Soft Materials, students sewed dot to dots and lines on paper to give them an idea of how it feels to operate a sewing machine, as this was a new experience for many of them.
In Food Technology, students used lots of cooked vegetables to make a quick snack, encouraging the use of left overs at home. They also made our special H.I.S cookies, which have been a school favourite for some years.
During the Music taster sessions students were introduced to various music learning opportunities. We looked at ex-students projects to provide students with ideas of how they can link music into their inquiry. Students were given hands-on time to experiment with a variety of instruments and learn about music technology.
